‘Seasonal Ontario’ produce is in full season now. This week, Carmen visited Riga Farms in Bradford to see this year’s crop and get some insight into farming in our local community. It is great to see our local products being handpicked in the fields and know that they are on our shelves the next day. Stay tuned for this video post next week!
Some of the great Ontario produce now available is swiss chard, kale, dandelion. beets, radishes, romaine lettuce and the leaf lettuce varieties.
Carmen’s favourite accompaniment to a homemade burger is a fresh dandelion salad. It is a more bitter salad staple. You can calm down the bitterness by adding escarole or some leaf lettuces. Be sure to use a white wine vinegar or red wine vinegar in your dressing. The acidity helps cut the bitterness. Serve your salad after your entrée, as dandelion aids well as a digestive, especially after a fully loaded burger.
Canada Day weekend is here and a great reason to get away to the cottage or stay home and enjoy some quality time with friends and family. Whether you are going away or having a stay-cation, the mix of amazing seasonal foods and the great weather allows for some great al-fresco dining.
