Embracing the Fat Cycle for Fat Burning

Apple, orange and avocado with measuring tape suggesting diet conceptIt seems that the ideal body becomes ever more elusive the harder we try to achieve it.  The potential is there, we just can’t figure out the magic formula or diet.  The odds are that 98% of dieters will fail at sustaining weight loss while only 2% of dieters will succeed.  Even more discouraging is the post diet weight gain after the valiant effort to get the excess weight off fails.

So let’s look at fat loss as an alternative to weight loss.

Scientists have been studying fat loss for more than a century, a science that is very different from weight loss and one that doesn’t bring in the exorbitant revenues that the weight loss industry does.  Fat loss is not elusive; it’s a matter of understanding the fat loss cycles and working with them to burn that unwanted body fat.

The key to burning unwanted body fat is to start the pattern of eating whole foods you like that are local and in season while being macronutrient balanced. (See the Power Up Program at Vince’s!) The next step is to wait for a fat cycle to start. This might take a few weeks until the body settles into a state of having stable blood sugar.

What does the fat cycle look like?

  • 2-5 days of thirst, even to the point of being parched.
  • 2-5 days of feeling soft or fat, having tight clothes and thinking you have failed AGAIN!
  • 2-5 days of not being hungry, shedding body fat with frequent urination and a sense that you have leaned down, even if only at the knees!

When a fat cycle begins, your body is giving up excess fat as an energy source to keep the body going.  It needs to hydrate old, stored fat to put it in a form that is usable.  This is why the first phase of the fat cycle is thirst.  For a few days you can’t help but drink more than normal and with the added water, your fat expands!  It’s not pretty but hydrating fat is the only way the body can burn it up.  The body might give up 3600 calories over the course of a few days and leave you a pound lighter.  If you are exercising, it might transfer the calories into muscle mass.

How will this affect hunger levels?

During the days that the body is giving up those calories, you aren’t as hungry.  If the body is providing the calories, the appetite is not activated.  At the end of the cycle, however, the appetite returns and you need to keep balancing those carbohydrates with fats, fibre and protein like the Power Up Program shows you how to do to encourage another fat cycle.

Being patient, eating like our ancestors, and embracing the fat cycle is the only way to an ideal body that is sustainable.

Think back… you’ve likely been unusually thirsty or frequenting the wash room and just never knew you were in a fat cycle.  It’s time to use that fat cycle as a tool and leave weight loss to the marketing industry!
