Halloween is that special time of year when we dress up our kids (and ourselves) as ghouls and goblins or a favourite character and head out to reconnect with neighbours we may not have seen in a little while or meet the new family on the street. Halloween is also great opportunity for kids to build their independence and confidence – in the comfort of their parents’ watch. This day is often one of the first opportunities for little ones to be allowed to approach neighbours’ homes on their own and use their own voice – even if that means screaming “Trick or Treat” as loud as they can. Make sure you involve your kids when it comes time to carving the pumpkin too. Have you wondered what to do with all the guts and seeds from inside?… Roast them of course! Try these Spiced Pumpkin Seeds this holiday.
With a bit of seasoning and a little honey, you can make a sweet and spicy snack with a satisfying crunch. Pumpkin seeds (or pepitas) provide bone-strengthening magnesium and copper, cholesterol-lowering phytosterols, and anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.
Spiced Pumpkin Seeds*
- Pumpkin Seeds (Cleaned and rinsed)
- 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
- Salt and Pepper
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1 pinch cumin
- 1 pinch cayenne
- 1 tbsp honey
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
2. Bake seeds for 20 minutes
3. Remove from oven and toss with all remaining ingredients
4. Return to oven and roast coated seeds until golden brown (approx 15 minutes).
5. Scrape pan and stir seeds as they cool to prevent sticking.
Every day at Vince’s Market, we celebrate the idea of giving to the future of tomorrow by offering Free Fruit for Kids. A healthy snack is a great way to keep kids satisfied and occupied when making a trip to the grocery store. We hope this makes your trip a little bit easier. Look for Ontario Apples in our Free Fruit for Kids baskets.
Be safe this Halloween by ensuring an adult is escorting the kids around. Check all candy first before allowing the little ones to dive in. Limit candy consumption to minimize sugar spikes and help teach kids about how much candy is OK and how much is too much.
