Health Benefits of Watermelon

all about watermelon for national watermelon dayI’ve always thought of watermelon as seasonal, but you can, and should, enjoy it year-round. There’s far more to this fruit than its 92 percent water and mild hint of sweetness.

As a kid, sometimes Mom would bring out a tray of cold watermelon slices on a hot summer afternoon. It was a welcome change from boring tap water (we didn’t have bottled then), and a healthy alternative to Kool Aid or pop – although that didn’t matter to us at the time.

Health Benefits of Watermelon

Each mouthful packs significant levels of vitamins A, C and B6, along with potassium, and the superstar phytonutrient lycopene.

You’ve probably read or heard a lot about lycopene in health studies and the news, and the advice was usually to eat more tomatoes and tomato sauce. That’s still good advice, but did you know that watermelons contain even more?

One serving of watermelon contains roughly 40 percent more lycopene than one serving of fresh tomatoes, making it one of the lycopene leaders in fresh produce. Guava may contain higher levels, but we all know which is more refreshing…

What’s the Big Deal About Lycopene?

More studies are needed, but research has shown that higher levels of lycopene may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease – including hardening of the arteries – along with preventing or treating certain types of cancer.

But let’s keep it light, as we’re marking a day that’s all about a juicy treat, not dry data. And part of the pleasure, for some, is in the seeds.

Ways to Enjoy Watermelon Seeds

No, not swallowing them – although you can sprout or roast them. I’m talking about spitting. Some kids, and adults, take pleasure in launching these slippery projectiles. There are even sanctioned contests for this wacky sport, along with a world record of 68 feet, 9 inches.

If, like me, you find this somewhat gross, you can pluck them out or buy “seedless” watermelons. These aren’t really without seeds, but are “sterile” hybrids that contain small, undeveloped seeds that are white, soft and easily eaten.

Either way, this fruit is delicious in salads, smoothies or a frozen watermelon daiquiri.

And did you know that, according to Guinness World Records, the heaviest watermelon was 350.5 pounds? That’s a lot of daiquiris!
