In the face of Canada’s troubling food waste problem, Vince’s has been a dedicated participant in the Newmarket Food Pantry’s Food Rescue program. This partnership is an ongoing effort to combat both food wastage and its environmental repercussions. Vince’s plays a key role by redistributing wholesome and nutritious food nearing its “best before” date to those grappling with food insecurity.

Indeed, much of the rescued food is placed in the Community Fridge, an outdoor commercial fridge set up for year-round use in front of Newmarket Library. Here, patrons can take what they need, choosing from the many grab-and-go items donated by local organizations as well as individuals.

In 2023, Vince’s donated 12,852 pounds (total value $41,255) to Food Rescue, which equates to 12,852 meals for vulnerable individuals and families. Some of the items (in order of popularity) include cut fruit and vegetable trays, prepared and bagged salads, dips, soups, prepared entrees, dairy and non-dairy milks, yogurt, cheeses, bottled juices, bread and bakery items, and more.

Resource Development Co-ordinator Vesna Mitchell noted the Community Fridge is monitored at least five times per day, with volunteers checking the quantity and quality of what’s available for clients. Public Health also drops by approximately twice per month.

“The Community Fridge is more than just a repository for food; it stands as a powerful symbol of connection and compassion,” she continued. “It serves as a central hub where neighbours come together to support one another, as well as contribute to the well-being of our planet by preventing wholesome, edible food from ending up in landfills. The success of this initiative owes much to the unwavering support of local businesses like Vince’s. Their commitment to both community and sustainability has played a pivotal role
in making this project a success.”

Vince’s has also been providing pre-selected food bags through an in-store program over the last eight years. Donations, in 2023 totaled 2,172 pounds/meals for a total value of $6,972.

“Our heartfelt thanks go to community pillars such as the Newmarket Food Pantry for their role in supporting so many families in the areas we serve,” said Vince’s President, Giancarlo Trimarchi. “In these challenging times, where many face the dilemma of paying
for adequate food or covering the soaring costs of housing, the importance of their work is heightened. We are pleased to know that our contributions are creating such a positive impact in the community.”

“Newmarket Food Pantry and the Community Fridge team are doing an amazing job of addressing the food insecurity issue,” said Vince’s Community Ambassador Maria Ciarlandini. “And the Vince’s Newmarket team is proud to be part of this community support initiative.”
