Travel Tips

travel

travelThis is the time of year when most people get the travel bug. The winter seems never ending and we are yearning for some Vitamin D. If you are traveling in the coming weeks here are some of my go-to travel tips.

Strengthen Your Immune System

When I know I’m going to be travelling, especially via airplane, I take extra measures to ensure I am in tip top shape before travel. I take extra vitamin C, vitamin D, elderberry, probiotics, and maintain a good diet. I also make sure to bring vitamin C with me, as well as my preferred over the counter medication just in case.

Bring Your Own Travel Snacks

Nothing is worse than travelling hungry. Food that is available either on the road or at the airport is usually pretty processed and expensive. Here are a few of my favourite food travel companions:

  • Nuts and seeds, homemade trail mix
  • Protein bars
  • Cut up fruits and vegetables
  • Babybel cheese
  • Popcorn
  • Peanut butter and jam sandwiches (they travel well and are satisfying)

Fruit, Fiber, Combine

With the change in routine, your bowel movements might change as well. One sure fire way to keep things regular is to up your fiber through fruits and vegetables and of course staying hydrated. Another bonus if you’re travelling to warmer climates is that a lot of the fruits may be local to you.

As always, I’m a big advocate of ensuring stable blood sugar levels, making sure not to overindulge in lonely carbohydrates, especially in the form of alcohol. As temping as those sugar filled drinks seem, consider them treats and try not to overdo it. Even better, have them with your meal so that you have some protein and fat to help slow down their absorption.

Water Yourself

Proper hydration is the key to health. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, or dizziness – none of which you would like on vacation.

Relax

The most rewarding part of changing your routine with travel is the ability to relax. We live in a world where stress is a normal part of day to day life so when you get the opportunity to “turn off”, take advantage.
