Ciders and radlers: the perfect ‘summer sipper’

Some of our favourite Ciders and Radlers

When it comes to summer beverages, I’m a fan of the offbeat. I enjoy craft beer, but am also partial to other beverages – namely ciders and radlers – that offer a typically sweeter, but sometimes more refreshing alternative. This brief, but eclectic sampling of summer sippers may be an ideal way to celebrate our great weather – perhaps with a small backyard barbecue, now that we are easing some of the pandemic restrictions.

Duntroon Cyder House

Duntroon may sound Scottish, and although it does have a connection with Isle of Islay, this Ontario town is home to a craft brewer that offers sulphite free, gluten-free and nut-free ciders made from hand-picked local apples.

Their Standing Rock Premium Off-Dry is best served well chilled, and delivers strong apple, with hints of butterscotch and citrus. It is nice with grilled sausages and creamy cheeses, and was the perfect partner to my bowl of chickpea tortillas dipped in roasted red pepper hummus.

Brickworks Ciderhouse

Brickworks Ciderhouse Rose Cider tastes as unique as it sounds. It blends apple cider with juice from blueberries and raspberries, finished with a touch of honey. Fruity and subtly sweet, yet still dry, it pairs nicely with snacks, and is also great to enjoy on its own.

Brickworks Stadium Island Peach Cider is a semi-sweet brew with the aroma of freshly-cut peaches. It is slightly tart with an apple undertone, and although it’s also nice on its own, this cider pairs well with ribs or burgers.

For those who prefer something a little closer to beer, radler may be just the ticket. Some may think it’s a fairly recent trend, but this effervescent blend of beer and either lemonade, grapefruit, or orange juice has been around for a century. That being said, Radler has evolved from a refreshment for German cyclists in the 1920s, to a summertime favourite we can all enjoy.

Ace Hill

Ace Hill Radler mixes their popular pilsner with organic citrus juice and low alcohol to create a refreshing brew that is light in colour with subtle aromas of malt, orange, Meyer lemon and a touch of peach and apricots – along with a clean finish.

Waterloo Brewing

Waterloo Brewing’s Grapefruit Radler is one of my faves. Both bitter and sweet, this malty, citrusy beverage blends real grapefruit juice and their craft lager for a crisp, refreshing brew with a slightly bitter finish (from the Hallertau hops). It is a fine accompaniment to chips and salsa, hummus and pita, or something hot off the grill.

Of course, there are still more craft ciders and radlers on our shelves than I’ve had time to try. Drop by for a custom six-pack (or twelve), and put together your own tasting party!
