Whether it’s for Thanksgiving or Halloween, October is pumpkin season. Sure, we’re spotting them – in all shapes and sizes – at nearly every grocery store and farmer’s market, but the iconic orange fruit (yes, the pumpkin is technically a fruit) is good for more than just carving jack-o-lanterns.
Pumpkin pie is one of my favourite desserts – homemade, or otherwise. You can build your own, starting with a frozen pie shell and canned pumpkin puree (pure, or sweetened and spiced), or from scratch with raw pumpkin and homemade pastry. Or save the time and pick one up at your local bakery or supermarket. Either way, it’s a treat.
Pumpkin pie may be seasonal, but there’s no reason to limit your enjoyment to a few short weeks. At Vince’s, they’re available year-round. Just pop your pie in the oven and then serve with a dollop of real whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
More seasonally, you’ll find some additional pumpkin items in our bakery. These include Vince’s Own pumpkin spice muffins and loaves, as well as a pumpkin coffeecake. And from Dufflet, we have both pumpkin pies and tarts. These latter items use a traditional pumpkin custard in a flaky pastry or buttery tart shell – topped with fresh spiced cream and candied ginger.
And what could be a better accompaniment to your treat than a steaming cup of pumpkin spice coffee? Muskoka Roastery coffees are handcrafted in small batches, and their pumpkin spice variety is subtly flavoured with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.
So drop by our store for all things pumpkin (or pumpkin spice), and enjoy this unique fall flavour. And create your own coffeeshop experience at home.
Until next time,
–Neil
