Inspiration for Healthy food options

To find inspiration for this week’s blog, I looked no further than this week’s flyer. Sure, it may be taking the easy way out, but for those of us trying to reboot our diets – many on a budget – it made sense to begin with a few hand-picked “sale” items.

Fresh Produce

Let’s start with the obvious: produce. Whether you’re embarking on a whole-foods diet, or simply a cleaner, healthier one, fresh fruits and veggies are the natural choice. The current flyer not only has a selection of each on the front page, but features our Vince’s Own family-size Greek and Caesar salads. These are ideal for those of you (like me) who hate cleaning, chopping and peeling veggies, and would rather just sit down and eat. Also featured are “Organic Girl” salads, which are triple washed (so you don’t have to), and they come in varieties from baby kale to baby spinach to hearts of romaine.

Plant-Based Milks

Calafia Farms plant-based milks are another healthy option. If you’ve made the choice to move away from dairy, Califia’s almond, coconut, and oat milks (including flavoured varieties), provide a rich alternative to cow’s milk and can be used in cereals, desserts, baking, and more. And, according to the Califia website, choosing plant-based milks can dramatically reduce your environmental “foodprint.”

For something a little more conventional, but always a favourite in my household, Vince’s Own chili is on sale at a special low price – only $4.99 for a 900ml jar! I’ve always enjoyed this home-made style recipe, made with wholesome, basic ingredients. And for the perfect accompaniment, just warm up a fresh Vince’s Own baguette, which is also in the flyer.

Gluten-Free Pizza

Some of us have gluten sensitivities, and might want to nix the bread. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a slice of pizza. New to Vince’s is our own gluten-free pizza. Just pop it in the oven and it’s ready in minutes. Our family likes to pile on some additional toppings like chopped veggies for an even healthier version!

Both the chili and pizza are ideal “game day” foods, keeping in mind that the big game is on February 7th. Also great for snacking are Mary’s Organic Crackers – also gluten-free – with both “original seed” and “super seed” varieties that come in flavours like Basil & Garlic, Seaweed & Black Sesame, and Chia & Hemp. These are rich and earthy, and pair nicely with chili, or a Summer Fresh heated dip (also in the flyer).

Sparkling Waters

And to wash this all down, check out AHA’s lineup of sparkling waters that come in a variety of cool flavour combinations. Some sound a bit unusual (ie. strawberry + cucumber or black cherry + coffee), and others a little less so, like blueberry + pomegranate and peach + honey. Whatever your preference, these are bold and refreshing, and have the added perk of no sweeteners, no calories, and no sodium.
