Local Veggies Now in Season at Vince’s!

Local Summer Veggies

Vince’s is known for our fresh produce, and that is something we can rely on year-round. Thanks to a global distribution service – not to mention the widespread use of greenhouses – we no longer have to worry about what’s in season. Any time of year, our favourite fruits and veggies are ready to pick somewhere around the world. We select the best of these when Vince’s founder, Carmen Trimarchi, makes his daily 5 a.m. trip to the Ontario Food Terminal.

But summer is special, as we get to enjoy the bounty of our local farms, which offers its own benefits:

  • Local produce is often harvested at the peak of its ripeness, which not only enhances flavour but also its nutrient content. There’s a much shorter distance (and time span) between the field and your table.
  • Reduced carbon footprint. Buying locally cuts down on fuel consumption – and greenhouse gases – due to reduced transportation needs.
  • Supports the local economy. When you buy local, you support the farmers in your community.

This flyer, we are featuring tomatoes on the vine, green beans, sweet red peppers, and a variety of bunched greens: dandelion, green Swiss chard, collards, and green kale. Grab a flyer at the store entrance or visit vincesmarket.ca to see what we are featuring each week.

There are also many more Ontario veggies now in our produce department. These include red and green cabbage, black kale, red and gold beets, kohlrabi, red Swiss chard, extra-large radishes, sweet peas, and a variety of lettuces: Boston, head, and romaine, not to mention red and green leaf lettuce. Plus, sweet corn is on the way.

With so many local choices, seasonal flavours, and colours on our shelves, now is the perfect time to focus on fresh summer salads. Whether you consider these to be a side dish for your barbecued meats – or the other way around – summer dining doesn’t get any better than this!

Until next time…

Neil
