Popcorn is Still an “A-List” Snack for Oscar Night
Sunday is Oscar night — a time of glitz, glam, and gourmet popcorn! These little nuggets of deliciousness aren’t just any snack; they can be the star of the show – even when the world tunes in to celebrate cinematic excellence.
Consider that popcorn isn’t your garden-variety corn. It’s a special type, bred to be a little more fun than the others. Among the six main types of corn — each playing a crucial role in our diets and economy — popcorn is the one destined for the limelight.
While we cherish ‘sweet corn’ for its slightly sugary, tender kernels perfect for those summer BBQs, and flour corn for its versatility in creating our beloved tortillas, popcorn is the diva of the corn family. It’s the one that undergoes a metamorphosis, thanks to its unique structure. With a hard outer shell encasing a moist, starchy heart, popcorn is primed for an explosive performance. Heat it up and it bursts into the tiny, fluffy, white clouds we all enjoy.
It brings me back to when I was a kid watching mesmerized as the foil cover of the “Jiffy Pop” would expand to the rhythmic popping of the kernels. Once the popping ceased, you had to quickly remove the foil pan from the burner, so as not to burn the bottom layer. Peel back the cover, add butter – and voila! We were all set for movie night on the small screen.
But not everyone’s into making their own popcorn, and that’s okay. For the convenience lovers among us, pre-popped bags keep the prep time (and cleanup) to a minimum – allowing you to enjoy family time to the max.
