Some local seasonal produce, focused on a pile of pea pods with a center one open showing the fresh peas.

Summer is in full swing, and at Vince’s, we’re always excited to bring you fresh, flavourful produce from Ontario farms. This week, we’re featuring a few local veggies in the peak of their season: peas, yellow and green beans, and field-grown peppers. They aren’t just colourful and delicious, these vegetables are packed with nutritional benefits.

Peas: take your pick

Ontario peas are at their peak, offering a sweet and crisp addition to your next meal. Whether you prefer garden peas, snow peas, or snap peas, each variety is brimming with vitamins and minerals. Peas are a source of vitamins C, K, thiamine, and folate, and they also provide a decent amount of fibre and protein, making them a great addition to a balanced diet.

How to Use Them:

Peas are versatile. Toss them into salads for a pop of sweetness, stir them into pastas for added texture, or enjoy them lightly steamed with a pat of butter. For a quick and tasty side dish, try sautéing peas with a bit of garlic and olive oil—delicious!

Yellow and Green Beans

Ontario’s yellow and green beans are now in season, bringing their crisp texture and mild flavor to your side dishes and salads. These beans are low in calories but high in nutrients like vitamins A, C, and K, as well as dietary fiber.

How to Use Them:

Green and yellow beans are perfect for a variety of dishes. Blanch them briefly and toss with a vinaigrette in your salads, or roast them with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt for a simple, flavourful side. They also pair wonderfully with garlic and lemon.

Field-Grown Peppers: Colorful and Crunchy

These always add a pop of colour to our Produce aisles. Whether you choose red, yellow, green, or orange, they deliver big on flavour and nutrition. Peppers are high in vitamin C, as well has having these nutrients: vitamin K1, vitamin E, vitamin A, folate, and potassium.

How to Use Them:

Field-grown peppers are versatile. Add them to salads for crunch and colour, stuff them with a mixture of rice and beans for a hearty meal, or grill them alongside your favorite meats for a smoky, sweet treat. For a quick snack, slice them up and pair with your favorite hummus or dip.
