Fire Up the Grill for Your Father’s Day Feast

A man grilling on a bbq on Father's Day

If your dad is a fan of the ‘cue, now’s the time to pick up a few key items for Father’s Day. Sure, you may think of the barbecue as his domain, but trust me – speaking as a dad – we do appreciate it when someone else takes a turn.

Why does barbecued food taste so good? Certainly, the BBQ sauce and rub have something to do with it, but there’s some real science behind the deliciousness of all things that are browned on the exterior – like grilled meats and veggies. It’s called the Maillard reaction, where the heat from your grill (or oven, or even your toaster) breaks down the proteins in your food so they react with its simple sugars to create that brown sear or crust we all love. You just need high enough heat – which is why boiling just won’t cut it.

Vince’s Father’s Day Favourites

You can browse our meat department for grilling inspiration, but here are a few items from our current flyer that may shorten your shopping trip.

  • Our “Butcher’s Choice” AAA-grade, tri-tip steak. This cut is boneless and fairly tender, with full flavor. Roast or grill, and then slice across the grain.
  • Marcangelo lamb skewers, or chicken or pork souvlaki. A real time saver – perfect for popping straight on the grill.
  • Grass-fed striploin or rib eye steaks. These have a more intense flavour than grain-fed beef, not to mention higher levels of Omega-3 fats.
  • Fresh ground chuck and chuck patties. Due to its higher marbling, ground chuck has a richer, beefier flavour and juicier texture than ground beef made from leaner cuts.

And for those dads who may choose to eat a more plant-based diet, there’s Beyond Beef and Beyond Burger. I’ve personally enjoyed and found both to have a taste and texture similar to beef – and are equally satisfying.

Just add a can or two of his favourite beverage (craft beer is always nice!), and you’ll have put together a Father’s Day feast that will be the highlight of his day.

Until next time…

— Neil
