Chocolates and flowers may sound a bit cliché, but the latter – especially after our long and dreary winter and cool, damp spring – should be well received by Mom.
Cut flowers are usually appreciated, and although they lack the longevity of those living in soil, they do instantly brighten a shelf, table or room. You can’t go wrong with roses, but my wife has always been partial to tulips – of which we carry in multiple shades in our floral department. Grab three bunches and create an assortment! Or buy a mixed bouquet, showcasing a variety of flowers, tones and textures.
But if you want your flowers to stick around, buy them potted. Some of the options include bougainvillea, mandevilla, mums, and mini roses.
Very popular right now are our mixed hanging baskets. These include a variety of annuals like geraniums, million bells, and petunias, all of which will flower throughout the season. “Just be sure to stay on top of the deadheading,” said our floral specialist, Debbie Rich. “That means breaking off the ones that have already flowered to encourage new blooms.”
For those who prefer a single variety, like geraniums, these are also available on their own, and in a variety of colours.
No matter which hanging basket you choose, these are ideal for those who are short on space for garden beds, or who simply need to dress up a porch or deck. They may need more watering than garden plants, but otherwise require less maintenance, as they are out of reach for most weeds.
Indeed, there are many floral options for Mother’s Day, but Debbie offers some additional advice: “If you see it, don’t hesitate to buy it. Because it may not be there when you return.”
If your mom is more into sweet treats than flowers, that’s okay too. After all, who can resist our Vince’s Own hand-crafted, fruit-topped cheesecake or field berry flan? Or how about artisan cakes from Dufflet, like their white chocolate mousse cake featured in this week’s flyer. It’s a classic white sponge cake, layered with white chocolate mousse and a touch of strawberry compote – topped with a pink and white ruffle.
Or for something a little less delicate – and perfect for sharing with the kids – grab a 12-pack of English Bay cookies, embedded with crunchy Reese’s Pieces.
None of this, of course, gets you off the hook regarding breakfast in bed, so make sure you have all the necessary supplies for a superb Mother’s Day feast: free-range eggs, bacon, and brioche or artisan bread for French toast. And, of course, real maple syrup to drizzle on top.
My kids are in their teens, so I’m expecting a little more support in the meal prep – and especially with cleanup.
Happy Mother’s Day everybody and let’s make it a special one!
