With Canada’s special 150th birthday this coming weekend I wanted to highlight some Canadian superfoods. Superfoods have become all the rage in the health food industry. While many come from far-away places we’ve got some national favourites that deserve some attention.
While not all of these foods originated in Canada, they are now grown here.
1. Maple Syrup
Nothing says Canadian Superfood like this beautiful sap that comes to us from the maple tree. It’s so Canadian that the maple leaf stamps our flag. It’s high in antioxidants with a wide range of nutrients including: magnesium, zinc, riboflavin, calcium and potassium. The darker the syrup the more nutrient rich.
2. Arctic Char
Arctic Char is the most northern freshwater fish that is harvested sustainably. It’s a great source of protein, B vitamins, and is high in anti-inflammatory Omega 3 Fatty Acids. 60% of our brain is fat and we need fats to function properly. Studies have shown that eating high quantities of omega-3 fatty acids reduces the risk and incidence of depression and cognitive decline in the elderly.
3. Hemp Hearts
Manitoba has become one of the world’s largest producers of this superfood seed. These seeds are high in plant-based protein, good fats, iron and fiber. They have a creamy, nutty taste and are great sprinkled on salads, yogurt, and tossed into smoothies.
4. Flaxseed
One of the richest sources of anti-inflammatory, plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. They are rich in lignans, which are fiber-related polyphenols that provide us with antioxidant benefits. If you buy them whole make sure to grind them in order to release their beneficial nutrients.
5. Lentils
Canada is now the world’s largest exporter of lentils to the global marketplace. Primarily grown in Saskatchewan, lentils are a great source of protein, iron, fiber and an abundance of minerals, making them a great vegetarian option. They are great in soups, salads, dips, and when combined with a grain they create a complete protein.
6. Wild Blueberries
The Maritimes and British Columbia deliver wild blueberries, one of the healthiest foods on the planet. They are extremely high in antioxidants, especially vitamin C, making them a great nutrient rich treat.
